About Paul Ahrens

Paul Ahrens played bass guitar in the early 70’s with the Buddy Rich Band and also more recently played upright bass with the famed Richie Cole and also famed international pianist Frank Puzzullo. Was part of the front band for Steppenwolf and with the same band made The Top 40 Hit List with a tune called Walkin’ Proud. He plays upright bass and bass guitar, all of the saxophones,
significantly the bari sax, as well as doubling on clarinet and flute.


He played at the Surf Ballroom and at the Roof Garden Ballroom both in Iowa; Veterans auditorium in Des Moines, Iowa; the Missouri State Fair; the Carolina Opera House backing world famous Frank Sinatra impersonator Brian Duprey; Notre Dame Jazz Festival; The New Orleans Preservation Jazz Hall Band; Las Vegas and throughout the USA. Pursued an Engineering career that is peaking now lately working with aircraft companies such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Gulfstream. Have been recently inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the Roof Garden Ballroom at Arnolds Park and in the past have played at the Surf Ballroom where Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson “The Big Bopper” played their last concert.
